Camelot

The set for Camelot was pretty fun to build. We used 4x4 posts to hold up this very tall platform with room for people to travel through underneath it. To help make it ridged we skinned the under side of the platform as well. The posts were covered with sonotubes to make them round. To anchor the legs to the deck we used extra large angle iron anchors on the back side of the posts.

We painted the deck with a scumble technique and then went over with a wet spattering to provide a broken texture. Then we painted on the celtic knotwork pattern.

The back drops are a kabuki drop that we built using eye screws and some pins attached to a string. Then we used some LED cyc-lights to color them for different scenes of the show. Then during the Guinevere song to symbolize the collapse of Camelot the kabuki screens dropped at the crescendo.

We also had to make the tables extra reinforced because during one of the fight scenes actors would jump from the tall platform onto the table. So behind the normal side styles we have a 2x4 frame and a second piece of plywood as well as some gusset braces made out of steel to tie the legs to the top, as well as reinforcing the tie bar between the legs.

I also acted in this play. I was Merlin and had to learn to make my voice sound old and raspy. I also did a lot of age makeup for the part - I remember taking photos of the makeup, but was unable to find them. If I do find them I will have to add them because I thought it was quite nice. I even added make up on my hands so they did not look youthful against my old face.

Another thing I remember building for this was my magic staff and wizard cloak. The cloak was a simple pattern sewn together out of some black velvety fabric, and then I used some puff paint to add magical runes to it. I was even allowed to keep the cloak after. The staff was a piece of PVC that I filled with sand I heated in the oven, it became pliable and I shaped it to have some bends and a curl at the top. Then I left the sand in it during the show so it was extra heavy so I had to move slowly and carefully - which helped to sell age into my movements.
